Sun conjunct Moon: New Moon birth, and the synastry foundation aspect

An aspect is the angular distance between two points on the ecliptic. A conjunction is a 0-degree aspect — the two points sit on the same degree, or close to it. Conjunctions are read as the most powerful aspect type in classical astrology because the two planets do not modify each other from a distance; they merge.

The Sun symbolises conscious identity, will, vitality, and the integrating centre of the self. The Moon symbolises inner emotional life, instinctual response, the body, and what a person needs in order to feel held. The two are the chart's luminaries — the largest and most personal points in any reading.

When the Sun and Moon are conjunct, the chart-holder carries identity and need on the same axis. They tend to want what they need and to need what they want — fewer translation costs, less inner argument. Astronomically, the conjunction is what produces a New Moon: the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, not lit from the Earth's perspective. People born on a New Moon carry that integrated-but-unlit quality in the chart.

In a natal chart. The chart-holder often reports an unusually unified sense of self — what they want and what they need run on the same setting. This usually reads as quiet self-confidence and an instinct-led decision style. The trade-off is sometimes described as a lower felt distinction between inner life and outer identity, which can mean less self-reflection. People with this aspect often develop more nuanced inner self-awareness in mid-life, when transits to the natal conjunction force them to articulate what they have always felt as one thing.

In synastry. The pairing tends to read as immediate ease. Quiet rooms feel companionable rather than awkward. Disagreements rarely escalate into the my-reality-versus-yours fight that other Sun-Moon aspects produce, because the realities overlap. The aspect is often quoted in long marriages and in unusually close parent-child or sibling pairs. The risk is shared blind spots — the same things look obvious to both charts, so the relationship sometimes lacks the friction needed for either person to grow on the Sun-Moon axis.

Worked example. A natal Sun at 4°15' Taurus and a natal Moon at 6°02' Taurus. Both are in Taurus, so the aspect is a conjunction by sign. The orb is the difference between the two degree-and-minute positions.

Natal Sun:        4°15' Taurus     (Taurus 0° = 30°, + 4°15' = 34.250°)
Natal Moon:       6°02' Taurus     (Taurus 0° = 30°, + 6°02' = 36.033°)

Sign placement:   Both in Taurus (a conjunction by sign)

Position 1 in absolute degrees:    34.250°
Position 2 in absolute degrees:    36.033°

Raw separation:        36.033° - 34.250° = 1.783°

Verdict:          TIGHT conjunction (within 3° orb)

Common orb conventions for Sun-Moon contacts:
  Exact:        0° to 1°
  Tight:        1° to 3°
  In effect:    3° to 8°  (luminaries get a wider orb)
  Out of effect: > 8°
